Apple has appointed Salman Dar as its head of government affairs for Pakistan, strengthening the technology giant’s engagement with Pakistani regulators, policymakers and other key stakeholders as the government seeks to bring the company into the local market.
Dar announced his new position in a LinkedIn post, saying he would lead Apple’s government affairs activities in Pakistan and support the company’s engagement with regulatory authorities, policymakers and stakeholders.
The appointment comes as the government seeks to attract major global technology companies to establish device manufacturing and assembly operations in Pakistan. Efforts are also underway to encourage Apple to begin local iPhone production by improving the regulatory environment and addressing investment barriers.
The chief executive officer of the Engineering Development Board recently told the National Assembly Standing Committee on Information Technology that 37 companies were manufacturing mobile phones in Pakistan and had produced more than 35 million devices.
He said Apple was the only major company that had yet to manufacture phones locally and that efforts were continuing to bring the company to Pakistan.
The EDB chief also told the committee that the prime minister was expected to meet Apple’s chief executive officer during a visit to the United States.
Dar brings more than three decades of experience in information technology, entrepreneurship and business development across Europe, South Asia, Africa and the Middle East.
