The federal government is willing to provide motorcyclists with monthly pocket money of Rs. 2,000 for petrol and diesel but won’t cut the petroleum levy.
The proposed facility would cover only about five litres of petrol at current prices, according to Express Tribune.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has approved the relief scheme for an initial period of three months. Its continuation will depend on available funds and the future of the Gulf War.
Relevant government authorities are developing the mechanism for distributing the assistance.
The main question is whether targeted cash support is the best way to deal with rising fuel prices. The Finance Ministry has resisted proposals to lower the petroleum levy.
The government has also increased its petroleum levy collections substantially. Petroleum levy revenue reached Rs. 1.567 trillion in the previous fiscal year.
The latest relief plan is designed to target support at one group of consumers rather than reduce fuel prices across the board.
The government has maintained that the sharp increase in fuel prices is linked to international oil market conditions and the ongoing US-Israel war on Iran. Domestic fuel prices have continued to rise as global crude prices remain elevated.
The Rs. 2,000 monthly relief may provide some support to motorcycle owners, but it does not reduce the underlying cost of petrol for consumers.
