The Central Development Working Party has approved a major push for olive production in Pakistan under the revised Phase-II project for the promotion of olive cultivation on a commercial scale.
Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal chaired the meeting and stressed the need for a professional, results-oriented strategy to expand olive farming across the country.
He said successful private-sector olive growers should be brought into the initiative to help scale up commercial production.
The project aims to expand olive farms in Balochistan and the newly merged districts, while the minister said olive plantations should eventually cover one million acres.
He also highlighted the potential of the Kallar Kahar-Islamabad corridor and the wider Potohar belt, directing that this potential be incorporated into the project.
Ahsan Iqbal said the olive cultivation initiative, launched in 2014 under Vision 2025, needs stronger private-sector participation to deliver better results.
The CDWP also recommended and approved several other development projects in higher education, governance, IT, sports, and water sectors.
However, the olive project stood out as a key agricultural initiative aimed at strengthening commercial farming and increasing Pakistan’s olive output.
