Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise owners have asked the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) to reduce the base player salary purse, calling the current amount too high.
The demand was raised at the latest PSL Council meeting held in London last week, chaired by PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who did not respond to the request during the session.
After the league’s first 10 editions, the PCB had raised the base salary purse to $1.6 million per franchise (around Rs. 450 million) under the auction system, extendable to $1.8 million to sign one eligible foreign player who missed the previous season.
Under the current structure, top-tier players can earn up to $150,000, second-tier $80,000, third-tier $40,000, and fourth-tier $21,500.
The call for a cut follows this year’s sale of three franchises, new entrants Hyderabad (Rs. 1.75 billion) and Rawalpindi (Rs. 1.85 billion), and existing side Multan Sultans (Rs. 1.08 billion).
The remaining five owners reacquired their teams at much lower prices, leaving new owners struggling more with costs. The PCB is also facing outstanding payment issues from some league stakeholders.
