Lexar has unveiled the Muse, a new portable SSD designed to attach directly to the back of a phone while recording high-resolution video. The drive was announced at IFA 2026 and uses a slim magnetic design to reduce the cable clutter normally associated with external storage.
The Muse is aimed at users who record large video files, including 4K ProRes footage on iPhones. Instead of hanging from a USB-C port, the SSD sits flat against the phone using magnets.
Thin Design and Magnetic Mount
The Lexar Muse measures 80 x 48 x 3.8mm and tapers to just 1mm at the edges. It weighs 26.5 grams and has an aluminum body.
Lexar includes a magnetic sleeve that allows the SSD to attach to MagSafe-compatible iPhones. This keeps the drive positioned against the back of the phone while recording.
The drive uses a custom connection system. One end of the included cable connects to the phone’s USB-C port, while the other uses a magnetic PogoPin connector that attaches to the SSD.
The setup keeps the cable close to the phone and away from the user’s hands and camera lenses. However, it also means the Muse depends on its dedicated PogoPin cable. A standard USB-C cable cannot be used to connect the drive to the phone.
1,050 MB/s Read Speeds
The Muse offers sequential read speeds of up to 1,050 MB/s and write speeds of up to 1,000 MB/s.
Lexar says the drive can record Apple ProRes 4K video at 120 frames per second directly to the SSD.
The Muse is compatible with USB-C devices, including the iPhone 15, iPhone 16, and iPhone 17 series. It also works with iPads, Macs, and PCs.
Lexar will offer a companion app that can automatically back up files from a phone to the drive.
Availability and Pricing
Lexar plans to launch the Muse in the fourth quarter of 2026. It will be available in 512GB and 1TB capacities.
The company has not announced pricing yet.
