Govt Defers Decision on New Tobacco Prices

The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) on Monday deferred a proposal regarding the Minimum Indicative Prices (MIPs) of tobacco crop and revision of cess rates for FY 2026-27.

The proposal was presented by the Ministry of National Food Security and Research during an ECC meeting chaired by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb.

After thorough discussion, ECC found that proposal required further rationale-building; therefore, ECC deferred the agenda.

The ECC directed the ministry to strengthen its case and submit the proposal again with proper analysis of the proposed tobacco prices and production-related charges.
