NVIDIA to Acquire Hugging Face for Nearly $13 Billion

NVIDIA has agreed to acquire Hugging Face for $12.93 billion, with plans to scale the platform, strengthen its infrastructure, and expand access to AI for developers and institutions worldwide.

Hugging Face will remain an open platform for the broader AI ecosystem after the acquisition. Developers will continue to choose the models, frameworks, cloud providers, inference services, and computing platforms they want to use.

NVIDIA compute will not be required to build on or deploy through Hugging Face.

Hugging Face Will Remain Open

Hugging Face will continue supporting open-source and open-weight models from developers across the AI industry.

The platform will also maintain multi-cloud and multi-accelerator support, allowing developers to choose the hardware and infrastructure that best fit their needs.

Hugging Face has grown into a major platform for the open-model community over the past decade.

More than 18 million developers, researchers and creators use the platform to share more than 3 million models, 500,000 datasets and 1 million applications.

More than 200,000 companies also use Hugging Face to discover, evaluate, customize, and deploy AI models.

NVIDIA Highlights Importance of Open Models

NVIDIA said open-weight models can expand access to AI by enabling startups, businesses, universities, and public institutions to use advanced capabilities without training each model from scratch.

The company said open models also allow organizations to select the most suitable model for different tasks while supporting innovation, cybersecurity, sovereignty, and broader AI adoption across sectors including factories, hospitals, farms, classrooms, and small businesses.

NVIDIA has also backed an open letter supporting the role of open weights in the AI economy.

The company said open weights can help distribute AI leadership across companies, institutions, and communities rather than concentrating access to advanced models.

NVIDIA’s Existing Contributions to Hugging Face

NVIDIA said it has invested in open-weight models and open-source platforms, including Hugging Face, for several years.

The company describes itself as the largest contributor of open models and data to Hugging Face.

NVIDIA has released more than 500 models and more than 250 open datasets on the platform.

It also develops its own models, libraries, and tools openly so developers can use, modify, and build on them.

What Changes After the Acquisition

NVIDIA plans to use its infrastructure, engineering resources, and global reach to improve Hugging Face’s platform reliability, safety, model evaluation, inference, and deployment capabilities.

At the same time, the company says it intends to preserve the open ecosystem that helped make Hugging Face a major platform for AI developers.

The Hugging Face team will join NVIDIA, while the Hugging Face brand will remain in place.

NVIDIA said the acquisition is intended to help Hugging Face serve the global AI community at a larger scale while keeping the platform open to different models, hardware providers, cloud services, and development tools.
