Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has quietly removed a requirement asking applicants to provide their grandparents’ marriage details when applying for proof of Canadian citizenship.
The change applies to the CIT 0001 form, which is used by adults and minors applying for a Canadian citizenship certificate.
IRCC had been asking applicants for their grandparents’ marriage details in the form instructions since January 2026. On August 25, the department went a step further and added dedicated fields in Section 9 of the form asking for the date and place of marriage of an applicant’s grandparents.
However, the requirement was removed within 48 hours.
The latest version of the form no longer contains the fields for grandparents’ marriage details, while the related instruction on page 13 has also been removed. IRCC had not publicly announced or explained the change.
Interestingly, both versions of the form carry the same revision number, CIT 0001 (08-2026) E, which could create confusion for applicants.
Those who downloaded the form on August 25 or August 26 may still have the earlier version containing the marriage-related questions. Applicants can check Section 9 on page 5 to determine which version they have. The earlier version includes fields asking for the date and place of marriage under the grandparents’ information sections.
Applicants who have not yet submitted their application are advised to download a fresh copy of the form to ensure they are using the latest version.
However, submitting the earlier version is not expected to result in an application being returned simply because it contains additional information about grandparents’ marriages.
The removal of the fields also does not mean IRCC can no longer request this information.
The department’s document checklist states that applicants may be asked to provide additional information or documents while their application is being processed. An immigration officer may therefore still request details or supporting documents related to a grandparent’s marriage if they are relevant to determining a citizenship claim.
Marriage information also remains elsewhere in the citizenship certificate application. Section 8 continues to ask applicants for the date and place of their parents’ marriage, while Section 12 contains marriage-related questions for certain applicants born before 1950.
Applicants who have already submitted their applications without providing their grandparents’ marriage details are also not expected to face penalties solely because the information was not included. IRCC can, however, contact applicants during processing if additional information is required.
For now, applicants preparing a new proof of citizenship application should ensure they have downloaded the latest CIT 0001 form before submitting their documents.
