The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has approved a new solid waste management system for rural Islamabad after recent flooding in Rawalpindi exposed serious problems linked to drainage, waste and urban management.
The plan will cover 65 union councils in Zones IV and V, with the CDA aiming to manage around 342 tonnes of waste every day through a modern collection and disposal network.
Under the plan, 1,610 workers and 103 types of machinery will be deployed for sanitation and waste collection. Door-to-door collection will be introduced in areas including Bani Gala, Ghouri Town and Lehtrar.
Mini tippers and hand carts will be used in areas with narrow roads and difficult access, while GPS tracking and route optimisation will be used to monitor waste collection and transportation.
The CDA will also establish a central command and control system to track field operations. Daily performance reports, digital attendance, facial monitoring and the Safe City system will be used to improve supervision and ensure complaints are addressed promptly.
The new system will be implemented with assistance from a Turkish waste management company.
The move comes after devastating monsoon flooding in Rawalpindi, where heavy rainfall caused urban flooding, damaged infrastructure and claimed lives, highlighting concerns over drainage and waste management in the twin cities.
CDA Chairman Sohail Ashraf said no part of Islamabad would be ignored when it comes to cleanliness. Member Environment Abdullah Khurram Niazi will oversee implementation of the new system.
