Bangladesh has moved closer to acquiring Chinese J-10CE fighter jets after studying the plane’s performance in the May 2025 encounter that saw Pakistan Air Force badly humiliate India.
According to Bloomberg, Bangladesh has completed a draft agreement for the acquisition of the Chinese-made multirole fighter aircraft, Bangladesh’s Adviser to the Prime Minister for Policy, Strategy and Information Zahed Ur Rahman said during a media briefing in Dhaka on Tuesday.
The planned purchase would mark a significant step in Bangladesh’s efforts to strengthen and modernize its air force.
Why Bangladesh Wants the J-10CE
The J-10CE is the export version of China’s J-10C multirole fighter. It is designed for both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions and features modern radar, electronic warfare systems and the ability to carry advanced air-to-air missiles.
Interest in the aircraft increased after the May 2025 war, during which Pakistan embarrassed India’s Rafale jets with Chinese-origin fighter aircraft and weapons.
Bangladeshi officials have previously pointed to the performance of Chinese military equipment during the May 2025 episode as an important consideration in evaluating potential acquisitions.
Bangladesh has maintained close defense ties with China for decades, with China supplying a significant portion of Bangladesh’s military equipment, including aircraft, naval vessels and other defense systems.
