Four women mountaineers from Gilgit-Baltistan have successfully summited 7,027-metre Spantik Peak without high-altitude porter support.
The climbers, Shama Baqir, Samana Rahim, Zooni Aslam and Zaiba Batool Shigri, completed the summit and safely returned to Skardu, according to the Alpine Club of Pakistan.
Romanian climber Alexandra Visan, who is battling cancer, also successfully reached the summit and returned safely. Punjab mountaineer Ayyan Adeel also summited Spantik without high-altitude porter support, carrying his own equipment with assistance from fellow expedition members.
Another member of the expedition, Bismah Hassan of Lahore, turned back around 250 meters below the summit after experiencing a health issue.
The achievements came amid difficult weather conditions on the mountain. Rescue teams have also faced heavy rain and snowfall while attempting to recover the body of Dr. Asma Mushtaq, who died while descending from Spantik and remains at Camp 3.
A six-member team of high-altitude porters reached Camp 2 but had to turn back because of worsening weather. Rescuers are expected to make another attempt when conditions improve.
