PS5 Owners Start Boycott Over Sony’s Plan to End Physical Discs
A group of PlayStation fans has started a week-long boycott of Sony’s gaming platform in protest against the company’s plan to end physical discs.
The protest has also attracted criticism from some gamers, who argue that simply staying offline won’t budge Sony. Some Redditors said the campaign could have been more effective if it had focused on directly reducing spending on PlayStation products and services.
The PSBlackout campaign began on August 23 and is scheduled to continue until August 30. Participants have been asked to avoid logging into PlayStation Network, playing games, making purchases or otherwise using PlayStation services during the protest.
The campaign follows Sony’s decision to stop producing physical game discs for new PlayStation releases from 2028. The move has angered players who prefer buying and owning physical copies of games rather than relying entirely on digital downloads.
Organizers say a coordinated drop in PlayStation activity could send Sony a stronger message than social-media criticism alone. The boycott was promoted as a seven-day blackout. Supporters have been encouraged to switch off their consoles or stay offline and avoid purchases.
The backlash over physical media has also spread to individual game announcements. PlayStation-related trailers and social-media posts have been flooded with complaints from users opposing the shift away from discs. The recent Phantom Blade Zero showcase was met with repeated criticism over the issue despite the game itself not being responsible for Sony’s new plan.
Sony has so far shown no sign of reversing its plans. The company has also indicated that it does not expect the move away from physical media to have a significant negative effect on its business.
For now, the #PSBlackout represents one of the most visible organized protests against Sony’s changing PlayStation strategy, but its actual impact on the company remains to be seen.
