At least 11 people, mostly schoolchildren, were injured after a school van veered off the road and caught fire in Murree on Tuesday.
According to Rescue 1122, the incident occurred near Bara Hotar Link Road, where a Suzuki Bolan left the road before catching fire.
Rescue teams reached the scene and evacuated the passengers as the vehicle was engulfed in flames.
The passengers were aged between four and 14. Nine of the 11 injured suffered burn injuries of varying severity.
Murree police said the injured children were in stable condition. Three, however, suffered severe burns. One child sustained burns to 42 percent of the body, while two others suffered burns to 38 percent and 26 percent, respectively.
Police said the cause of the incident had not yet been determined and that legal action would be taken after an investigation.
Murree District Police Officer Raza Tanveer Sipra visited the hospital to check on the injured children.
“We are maintaining constant contact to ensure the provision of the best possible medical care to the injured children and treatment for those who have been referred,” he said.
Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz sought a report on the incident, and also took notice of vehicle overloading and the lack of adequate fire safety measures.
