The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) of the Cabinet has approved the formation of a high-level steering committee to assess Pakistan’s wheat import requirements and develop a mechanism for handling future import decisions in consultation with the provinces.
The decision was taken during an ECC meeting chaired virtually by Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb on Thursday.
The committee, to be chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, will evaluate the country’s wheat requirements, review import proposals, and devise an operational framework based on provincial demand.
Its members include the federal ministers for National Food Security, Commerce, Economic Affairs, and Law, along with the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister for Coordination, the Prime Minister’s Coordinator on Agriculture and Food Security, the finance, commerce, and food security secretaries, the Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), the chief secretaries of all four provinces, and the Chairman of the Trading Corporation of Pakistan (TCP).
According to the Finance Division, the committee will carry out need assessments and recommend a coordinated mechanism for wheat imports whenever required, taking into account demand from the provinces.
