Your Android Phone is About to Become a Lot More Customizable

A new Android 17 update is about to bring a lot more customizability to Android phones.

Google has released Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 for eligible Pixel devices, bringing several bug fixes alongside new customization and security features.

The new Quick Settings layout editor allows users greater control over the panel’s arrangement. Screenshots of these features were shared on X by Mishaal Rahman.

Quick Settings Finally Gets More Control

Android 17 now lets users rearrange the main sections of the Quick Settings panel, rather than being restricted to Google’s default layout.

Users can change the order of the brightness slider, Quick Settings tiles, and media player. Individual Quick Settings controls can also be rearranged, while selected toggles can appear as larger tiles.

This gives Pixel users considerably more flexibility to place frequently used controls where they are easiest to reach.

More Color and Visual Customization

Google is also expanding Android’s theming options.

The updated Dynamic Color system adds a slider that lets users fine-tune their preferred system accent color rather than choosing only from preset options. The interface also offers different theme treatments for those colors.

Android 17 is also expanding the use of blur effects across parts of the system interface, continuing Google’s move toward a more translucent visual style.

Some of these visual changes are still part of the beta experience and could be adjusted before the final release.

More Scam Protection

Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 also introduces additional protection against social-engineering scams involving call forwarding.

When users manually enter certain call-forwarding USSD codes, Android will now display an operating-system-level confirmation message before executing the request.

Google is also restricting apps from silently triggering these call-forwarding commands in the background using standard phone permissions.

Other USSD functions, including account checks and mobile-money requests, are not affected by the new restriction.
