The Punjab Communication and Works Department will begin construction of two underpasses worth Rs. 8 billion on Peshawar Road in Rawalpindi from September 7, with work planned at Race Course Park and Charing Cross.
The Frontier Works Organisation (FWO) has secured the construction contract and completed alternate service roads to keep traffic moving during construction.
Traffic on Peshawar Road will be diverted to the newly constructed service roads once work begins. The alternate routes run from Qasim Market to Radio Pakistan and from Maryam Hospital to Rafay Mall.
A senior district administration official told Dawn that authorities had initially planned three underpasses at Race Course Park, Army Graveyard and Charing Cross. The plan was later revised to include only two underpasses, while the Army Graveyard site will receive an at-grade road.
Utility shifting work, including electricity pylons, water supply lines, telephone connections and cable networks, has already been completed. The underpasses are part of a broader plan to establish a 25-kilometer signal-free corridor from Islamabad Expressway to Motorway Chowk along Peshawar Road.
The corridor aims to reduce travel time between the two points to 15 to 20 minutes. Construction on the two underpasses is expected to take around two to three months. The General Post Office Chowk project was completed last year, while the Kutchery Chowk remodeling project was completed in May.
