WhatsApp is testing a dedicated Contacts tab in its Android app, giving users a new way to browse people, check who is online and see birthday reminders.
The feature is currently available in the latest WhatsApp beta for Android through the Google Play Store. It is still under development and has not rolled out to everyone.
New Contacts Tab
The new Contacts section appears directly in WhatsApp’s bottom navigation bar.
It displays a list of contacts and uses a green dot to indicate which people are currently online.
Users who have disabled their last seen or online visibility will not appear as online.
Birthday Reminders
WhatsApp is also adding birthday information to the Contacts tab.
If a contact has a birthday on the current day, WhatsApp will show a cake emoji alongside a “Birthday today” label.
The birthday information is automatically pulled from the user’s phone contacts.
Search and Sorting
A search bar at the top lets users find contacts using a name, phone number, or username.
The contact list can also be sorted either alphabetically or by activity, with currently online contacts appearing first.
The tab additionally includes an option to invite people who do not already use WhatsApp.
For now, the feature remains limited to beta testers, and WhatsApp has not announced when it will become available to all Android users.
