Meta is introducing an AI-powered Scam Alert feature on WhatsApp that can detect potentially fraudulent messages and warn users before they continue a suspicious conversation.
According to The Verge, the new feature uses on-device machine learning to assess chats for signs of scam activity. It is currently being rolled out to a limited group of users as a beta feature. Many analysts on X wrote the feature would be available worldwide.
When WhatsApp’s system identifies a conversation as potentially fraudulent, it displays a warning directly in the chat. The warning is visible only to the user receiving it.
Users can then choose whether to block the sender, report the conversation or continue chatting.
If the warning is incorrect, users can mark the conversation as trusted.
Meta says the new system is designed with privacy in mind. The company also says users can disable the Scam Alert feature whenever they choose.
WhatsApp has already introduced another AI-based security measure this year to identify suspicious device-linking requests, which scammers can use to gain access to victims’ accounts.
The new Scam Alert feature is initially being tested on a limited basis; a worldwide launch comes later.
