Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has called on the government to give Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan “fair treatment,” saying he misses him as a friend, mentor, and leader.
Akram made the remarks during the “Old Boys, New Balls” podcast, co-hosted by former England captain Ian Botham. He also thanked the former international cricket captains who recently signed a petition in support of Khan.
“We would like to thank all the captains that recently signed a petition for Imran,” Akram said.
Speaking about his former captain, Akram said he missed Khan as a friend and mentor and that people also missed him as a leader. He added that they had not seen his picture for three years.
Akram, who was a key member of Pakistan’s 1992 World Cup-winning team under Khan, then called on the government to treat the former prime minister in the same way other politicians had been treated in the past.
He also expressed hope that Khan would be released soon, saying the nation was behind him.
Akram’s comments come weeks after 21 former international cricket captains renewed their appeal to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif over Khan’s medical treatment, calling for the imprisoned PTI founder to receive care in line with the Supreme Court’s directives.
A three-member Supreme Court bench on August 18 ordered Adiala Jail authorities to transfer Khan to Shifa Hospital for medical assessment and treatment within two days.
However, Khan was instead taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS), where doctors from Shifa International Hospital were also present, according to Information Minister Attaullah Tarar.
Tarar said Khan’s medical examination was conducted in the presence of his sister and his doctors. A team of specialists, including an ophthalmologist, cardiologist, and physician, carried out a detailed examination and declared him “medically fit.”
PTI later filed a contempt petition in the Supreme Court, alleging that the government had violated the court’s order regarding Khan’s transfer to the hospital.
Khan, 73, has been in jail since August 2023 after being convicted in several cases. He and PTI maintain that the cases are politically motivated.
