US to Livestream Execution of Former Army Major

The Pentagon has announced plans to livestream the execution of former United States Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, who was convicted of killing 13 people and injuring 32 others in the 2009 Fort Hood shooting.

Hasan is scheduled to be executed by firing squad at Fort Hood, Texas, on December 3, 2026. If carried out, it would be the first US military execution in more than 65 years.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that the execution would be public during a television interview.

“We’ll make sure that people are able to watch it, that it’s public,” he said.

Pentagon officials subsequently confirmed that the execution would be livestreamed, with further details to be released later. President Donald Trump approved the execution following Hegseth’s recommendation.

Hasan, an Army psychiatrist, opened fire inside a medical processing facility at Fort Hood on November 5, 2009. A military jury convicted him of 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder in 2013 and sentenced him to death.

However, the scheduled execution could face further legal challenges. Experts say Hasan can seek a review in civilian court through a habeas petition, which challenges the legality of his detention and could delay proceedings.

The livestream announcement has also drawn criticism from human rights advocates and legal experts over the public broadcasting of an execution.
