US Student Visa Fraudster Used ChatGPT to Trick Laiba Ejaz

A suspect accused of defrauding Laiba Ejaz in a fake US university admission and visa scheme allegedly used ChatGPT to impersonate multiple people and make the fraud appear genuine, according to investigators.

Police say the prime suspect, Muhammad Noman, learned that Laiba wanted to pursue higher education in the United States and allegedly presented himself as someone capable of arranging her university admission, scholarship, and student visa.

Investigators allege that Noman created fake online identities, including a woman named Aiza and a person presented as her brother living in the US. He allegedly controlled the accounts himself while making Laiba believe she was communicating with different people involved in her admission process.

A key revelation in the investigation is the alleged use of ChatGPT to generate responses while operating these fake identities. Police believe the AI tool helped the suspect answer Laiba’s questions and maintain the impression that several genuine individuals were handling her case.

Laiba and her family were allegedly told that she had secured a scholarship for studies in the US. The suspect reportedly provided fake admission letters, scholarship documents, visa-related paperwork and payment receipts to support his claims.

Investigators say Laiba eventually became suspicious after her supposed US visa interview date was repeatedly changed. She then began verifying the paperwork and discovered that documents linked to her admission process were allegedly fake.

The case involves an alleged fraud of Rs. 9.3 million, which investigators say was collected from Laiba and her family on the pretext of arranging the admission, scholarship, and US student visa.

The suspect has since been arrested, while investigators are examining his devices and online activity. The allegations, including the reported use of ChatGPT in the scheme, remain subject to investigation and court proceedings.
