US President Makes Blunt Admission About His Election Campaign [Video]

US President Donald Trump has told supporters in Tennessee that they would still applaud him if he said “the stupidest things” and defended his political campaign as a matter of common sense.

Trump made the remarks at a rally in Clarksville, Tennessee, on Saturday while reflecting on the enthusiastic reception he receives from crowds. The audience laughed and clapped when he suggested they would applaud even his most foolish remarks.

“There is such love in these rooms,” Trump said, describing the atmosphere at his rallies. He then added, “I could say the stupidest things and you’d clap.”

Trump quickly followed the remark with a defence of his message, saying his speeches were based on common sense rather than simply conservative politics.

“But we don’t say the stupidest things. We say things of common sense. We say things that make sense,” he said.

He argued that several of his political priorities were matters of common sense, including border security, lower taxes and a strong military.

“We want to have a border, we want to have low taxes, we want to have a great military,” Trump said, adding that these were the kinds of things he believed made sense to ordinary Americans.

Trump appeared in Tennessee to support Republican candidates Marsha Blackburn, who is running for governor, and Senator Bill Hagerty, who is seeking the governorship.

Trump also questioned why he needed to campaign in a state where he said the Republican candidates were already doing well. He said he had come just to thank supporters.
