The US State Department has launched a new online portal allowing the public to report suspected visa fraud and misuse.
According to a statement issued by the department, the platform is designed to provide a “convenient and reliable way” for people to submit information about fraudulent visa applications, travel schemes and other forms of misuse for review and possible action.
The State Department said public tips have already played an important role in identifying visa fraud cases.
“Many of the tens of thousands of visa fraudsters the Department has identified and held accountable during President Trump’s second term were discovered thanks to tips provided by upstanding and concerned members of the public,” the statement said.
The department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs has also stepped up fraud detection and prevention efforts under President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio to prevent people from traveling to the US through fraudulent means or for illegal purposes.
According to the department, visa fraud can include fake documents or travel plans, sham marriages arranged by brokers, shell companies, fabricated job offers and involvement in birth tourism.
The State Department said such schemes can defraud the US government, affect American communities and workers, and pose risks to national security and public safety.
It added that people found violating US visa laws could face visa revocation and referral to law enforcement agencies for further investigation.
The department has encouraged anyone with information about suspected visa fraud or misuse to submit a report through the new portal.
