The US government has launched America.gov, a new AI-powered platform that allows people to ask questions in plain language and find relevant federal government information without searching through multiple agency websites.
US President Donald Trump unveiled the platform on Tuesday and signed an executive order directing federal agencies to integrate eligible services with America.gov. The government wants the website to eventually become a single entry point for accessing federal information and services.
America.gov works much like popular AI chatbots. Users can enter a question and receive a response based on information from official government websites, along with links to the original sources and guidance on what they can do next.
For example, instead of searching different agency websites to find out how to renew a passport or access government benefits, a user can start by asking America.gov directly.
The US General Services Administration (GSA), which operates the platform, says America.gov combines information from more than 29,000 government websites with AI-enhanced search tools.
The website can currently help users find information about services such as passport renewals, Social Security updates and other common federal needs. Its functions remain limited at launch, with more services expected to be added over time.
Trump said the system would eventually be able to handle more complicated government-related tasks, including passport applications and access to health and retirement benefits.
The platform was developed through the White House’s National Design Studio in partnership with the GSA. The initiative has been led by US Chief Design Officer Joe Gebbia, the co-founder of Airbnb who joined the Trump administration in the newly created design role last year.
Gebbia has said the platform uses Google’s Gemini and xAI’s Grok as part of its AI system.
Under the executive order, America.gov is intended to develop beyond simply answering questions. Where legally and technically possible, users will eventually be able to sign in, complete government transactions and access services without moving between different federal agency websites.
The order also calls for Login.gov to be integrated into America.gov for secure authentication and requires agencies to identify eligible public-facing services that can be connected to the platform.
The government says the aim is to make dealing with federal agencies faster and simpler by giving users one place to find information and, eventually, complete common government tasks.
