The University of Southampton in the United Kingdom is accepting applications for a PhD research opportunity in advanced materials and aerospace engineering, with applications closing on October 31, 2026.
The project, titled Multiphysics Modeling of Degradation in Next-Generation Thermal Barrier Coatings, is open to eligible UK and international students. It will focus on developing computational models to understand how protective coatings used in high-temperature environments deteriorate over time.
The opportunity is listed as competition-funded, with prospective students able to be considered for several university funding schemes. However, funding is competitive and is not guaranteed for every applicant.
What Does the PhD Project Offer
The research will investigate next-generation thermal barrier coatings used to protect components in aerospace, energy and defence applications, particularly gas turbines that operate under extreme temperatures.
The project will focus on coatings produced through suspension plasma spray (SPS) and solution precursor plasma spray (SPPS). Researchers will develop multiphysics models to examine how these coatings respond to repeated heating and cooling, prolonged high-temperature exposure, and chemical damage from molten sand deposits.
Selected researchers will have access to high-performance computing and experimental facilities while working across materials and aerospace research.
Who Can Apply
Applicants must hold a UK 2:1 honours degree or its international equivalent in mechanical engineering, materials engineering, or aerospace engineering. Candidates should also have experience in computational mechanics or multiphysics modelling.
Knowledge or experience in fracture mechanics and chemo-mechanical degradation is essential for this research project.
Applicants should have an interest in multidisciplinary research combining materials science, engineering mechanics, and aerospace applications.
The opportunity is open to both UK and international students, including applicants from Pakistan who meet the academic and technical requirements.
Candidates should review the University of Southampton’s official project page for the complete entry requirements and any applicable English-language requirements before applying.
How to Apply for the Southampton PhD Opportunity
Interested candidates can apply through the University of Southampton’s online postgraduate research application system.
Applicants should select Research as the program type and choose the 2026/27 academic year.
Select the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, then choose full-time or part-time study.
Next, search for PhD Engineering & the Environment (7175). Enter the project supervisor’s name in Section 2 of the application.
