Your old work laptop does not necessarily need to be abandoned or sold. It can easily be repurposed into a Chromebook for free and without any technical expertise.
According to Engadget, one way to keep an aging computer useful is to replace Windows or macOS with Google’s ChromeOS Flex. The operating system generally requires fewer resources than Windows and can run more smoothly on lower-end hardware.
What You Need
ChromeOS Flex requires an Intel or AMD processor, at least 4GB of RAM, and 16GB of storage. CPUs from 2012 or earlier may not support newer versions of ChromeOS.
Users also need a USB flash drive with at least 8GB of capacity. The installation process erases everything on the drive.
A working computer with Google Chrome installed is also required to create the installation media. This can be the same computer that will eventually run ChromeOS Flex.
How to Install ChromeOS Flex
Users first need to install Google’s Chromebook Recovery Utility extension in Chrome.
After connecting the USB drive, open the extension through Chrome’s Extensions menu and select Get started. Choose Google ChromeOS Flex from the available options, select the USB drive, and allow the utility to prepare the installation media.
Once the USB drive is ready, connect it to the computer where ChromeOS Flex will be installed.
Restart the computer and repeatedly press the appropriate boot-menu key, which may be F10, F12, or Del, depending on the device. Users may need to check their computer’s manual or search for the correct key for their model.
From the boot menu, select the USB drive and wait for ChromeOS Flex to load.
The setup process gives users the option to either install ChromeOS Flex or try it temporarily. The trial option does not retain data between restarts, but it allows users to check whether the operating system works properly with their hardware.
Installing ChromeOS Flex permanently will erase all existing data on the computer, so users should back up important files beforehand.
After installation finishes, remove the USB drive and restart the computer to begin using ChromeOS Flex.
ChromeOS Flex Has Some Limitations
ChromeOS Flex can extend the useful life of an older computer, but support does not last indefinitely.
Google maintains a list of certified ChromeOS Flex devices with defined support periods. Uncertified hardware may also run ChromeOS Flex, although compatibility is not guaranteed.
ChromeOS Flex also does not officially support dual-booting with Windows or another operating system. Users can install it on a USB drive and boot from it manually while keeping Windows on the main drive, but performance will be noticeably slower.
Another limitation is biometric authentication. ChromeOS Flex does not support biometric login and does not allow users to set up a PIN for login at startup. These features are available on regular Chromebooks because they include dedicated security hardware.
As a result, ChromeOS Flex users may need to enter their Google account password each time they log in.
The operating system also lacks the Google Play Store and does not include the Android virtual machine found on most Chromebooks. This means users cannot install or sideload Android apps.
Some compatible devices can enable Linux support, although Linux applications may need to be installed through the command line.
Google also maintains a support page explaining the differences between full Chromebooks and ChromeOS Flex devices.
Despite these limitations, ChromeOS Flex remains a lightweight operating system centered around a capable web browser. For older but still functional computers, it can provide a simpler alternative to replacing the hardware entirely.
Linux remains another option, but ChromeOS Flex generally requires less setup.
