Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has confirmed that the defense pact between Turkiye, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia is technically the same as NATO’s Article 5 mutual defense agreement, while stressing that the accord does not target Iran.
Speaking to state-run Anadolu news agency, Fidan said the three countries had established a general commitment to support each other’s security. He said the allies would consult each other to determine the nature, scope, and format of assistance if any member faced an attack.
Fidan said Turkiye, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia had worked for two years and eight months to finalize the agreement. He said the pact could eventually expand to include other regional countries.
He said Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan wanted to expand the alliance beyond the three founding members and identified Egypt as a potential future member once the countries resolve certain technical issues.
Fidan said the alliance would establish a ministerial committee similar to NATO’s structure and create a general secretariat in Saudi Arabia. He added that the first committee meeting would determine the alliance’s operational arrangements.
Fidan also said Turkiye should join any international coalition formed to protect Red Sea shipping from Houthi attacks, arguing that maritime security directly affects Turkish interests.
