Turkey Bans Social Media for Children Under 15

Turkey has banned social media platforms from providing services to children under the age of 15 under new regulations published in the Official Gazette.

The regulations, issued by the Cyber Security Directorate, require social media companies to prevent children below 15 from accessing their services.

For users aged 15 and older, platforms must provide age-appropriate services and introduce safeguards that consider their physical, mental, psychological, social, and emotional development.

Social media companies will also be required to introduce age verification systems that protect users’ personal information. These systems must only determine whether a user meets the minimum age requirement without verifying their identity.

The regulations further require platforms to make their age verification methods, algorithms, and child protection policies transparent and open to review by users, parents, and the Cyber Security Directorate.

Companies must also provide clear and easy-to-use parental control tools to help parents manage their children’s online activities.

The new measures aim to ensure that social media platforms prioritize children’s safety and well-being while providing age-appropriate online services.
