Toyota Is Bringing a Hydrogen Hilux in 2028 With 400+ km Range

Toyota is continuing its push into hydrogen mobility, with a fuel-cell Hilux scheduled to enter production in 2028.

The hydrogen-powered pickup is being developed with a target driving range of more than 400 km under WLTP testing, giving Toyota another alternative powertrain for its commercial vehicle lineup.

Over 400 km Range and 2,500 kg Towing Target

Toyota outlined the latest development targets at IAA Transportation in Hannover on September 14, 2026. Alongside the targeted range, the company is also aiming for a towing capacity of up to 2,500 kg.

Both figures remain development targets and are not yet final certified specifications.

Toyota has previously confirmed that the hydrogen Hilux is planned for Europe and Oceania from 2028. There is currently no confirmed timeline for Pakistan.

How the Fuel-Cell Hilux Works

The Hilux FCEV uses hydrogen to generate electricity onboard.

A fuel cell combines hydrogen with oxygen from the air, producing electricity that powers an electric motor. Water is produced as the main byproduct of the chemical reaction.

This is different from a hydrogen combustion engine, which burns hydrogen directly inside an engine.

Toyota already uses fuel-cell technology in the Mirai and is applying similar principles to larger commercial vehicles.

Toyota Is Testing Hydrogen Beyond the Hilux

Toyota’s hydrogen strategy extends beyond passenger cars and pickups.

The company is working with Scania and IVECO on fuel-cell systems for heavy-duty trucks.

Toyota GAZOO Racing also plans to enter a fuel-cell Hilux in the Dakar Rally Future Mission 1000 category in 2027.

The project is expected to provide another demanding testing environment for the technology before the production Hilux arrives.

Toyota is separately developing hydrogen combustion engines through its motorsport programs.

Infrastructure Remains the Biggest Challenge

Toyota has acknowledged that hydrogen vehicles cannot succeed on their own.

A viable market also requires widespread hydrogen production, distribution and refuelling infrastructure, along with customer demand and supportive regulations.

That remains one of the biggest barriers to wider adoption of fuel-cell vehicles.

For now, the key milestone is the planned 2028 launch of the Hilux FCEV, while its final range, towing capacity and other production specifications will be confirmed closer to launch.
