The Rawalpindi Naan Bakers Association has warned that it may shut down tandoors if the supply of subsidised flour is not restored soon.
According to Express News, the Food Department has suspended the delivery of flour allotted to naan bakers, prompting shop owners to threaten closure.
The association said flour depots for Rawalpindi bakers have remained closed for the past two weeks without any explanation from the deputy commissioner’s office.
Bakers said they are now forced to buy expensive flour from the open market, making it impossible to sell bread at the official price.
The association said only 200 out of 4,600 naan bakers in Rawalpindi were receiving government flour before the supply was stopped. Sources also claimed that cheap government flour was being sold outside the official system.
Association president Shafique Qureshi said if flour delivery is not restored immediately, tandoors across the city will be shut down after August 14.
