Spain will introduce temporary border controls on flights and ships arriving from Italy from midnight on Saturday until September 7, as tensions between the two countries grow over irregular migration.
Under the measures, Spanish authorities will carry out passport, nationality, and visa checks on Italian passengers as well as travelers from other countries arriving via Italy.
The Spanish government said the decision was taken amid continued irregular migratory pressure and would remain in place while Italy maintains similar controls on arrivals from Spain.
Italy introduced the restrictions last week after 72,000 migrants entered Spain’s African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco on July 30.
Earlier on Friday, Spain warned that it would impose reciprocal measures unless Italy removed its border controls by Sunday.
Italy, however, rejected the demand, saying it would not give in to “ultimatums or impositions” and would keep its controls on arrivals from Spain in place until at least August 15.
