Qualcomm has unveiled the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, two new high-end mobile platforms designed for upcoming Android flagship smartphones.
Both chips focus on on-device AI, gaming, and sustained performance under heavy workloads. They are expected to power devices including the Motorola Signature 27, OnePlus 16, and iQOO 16.
2nm Process and 5GHz CPU
Both platforms are built on a 2nm process and use Qualcomm’s custom Oryon CPU architecture.
Each chipset features two Prime cores running at up to 5.0GHz and six Performance cores reaching up to 4.0GHz.
This makes them the first mobile CPUs to cross the 5GHz mark.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 includes all the features of the standard Gen 6, while adding faster AI processing, 50% more shared FlexCache memory, and additional gaming features.
Camera Upgrades
Both platforms also bring improvements to camera processing.
The Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 supports video recording at up to 8K 60fps and 4K 240fps.
The standard Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 supports up to 8K 30fps and 4K slow-motion recording at 120fps.
Greater Focus on On-Device AI
Both chips feature an upgraded Hexagon NPU with a new Element Accelerator.
They support context windows of up to 32K and can run AI models with as many as 200 million parameters.
Qualcomm is also focusing on what it calls agentic AI, allowing devices to handle more AI tasks directly on the phone.
The Extreme version adds a new Sensing Hub with dual Micro NPUs.
Qualcomm claims this setup delivers up to 85% more performance and 20% better efficiency for tasks such as understanding messages, emails, and conversations in context.
Gaming Improvements
Both platforms include Adreno Neural Fusion, which uses AI to improve frame generation, image quality, and overall graphics.
The Extreme model adds dedicated matrix cores and high-performance memory to further improve gaming performance.
Both chips are expected to compete with Apple’s A20 Pro and MediaTek’s Dimensity 9600 Pro in benchmark testing.
For regular users, the biggest differences are expected to appear in gaming, on-device AI agents, and sustained heavy workloads rather than everyday tasks.
