Traffic police and the Environmental Protection Agency have decided to set up joint checkpoints to restrict smoke-emitting vehicles from entering highways.
SSP Headquarters Syed Nadeem Abbas has issued a letter to all CTOs and DPOs, directing strict action against smoke-emitting vehicles.
The letter says no smoke-emitting vehicle will be allowed to run on the road.
Joint operations involving the traffic police, EPA and transport department have also been ordered.
Action will also be taken against open vehicles carrying sand, debris and husk, while vehicles transporting construction material must be covered with tarpaulin.
All vehicles, including motorcycles, have been directed to keep headlights and taillights functional.
Reflective tapes and stickers must also be installed on commercial and heavy vehicles, loaders and tractor-trolleys.
The letter says the crackdown on overspeeding, racing and dangerous driving will be intensified.
It also directs that parking of heavy vehicles on the carriageway and road shoulders in fog-prone areas be stopped.
Drivers will also be educated to maintain proper distance, reduce speed and use fog lights.
