Sindh Records Another Death by Stray Dog Bite

A 38-year-old man from Tharparkar has died of rabies at Indus Hospital in Karachi, bringing Sindh’s reported death toll from the disease this year to 38.

According to a hospital spokesperson, Naimatullah, a resident of Nohriyo in Diplo taluka, was bitten by a dog approximately two and a half months ago.

He received four doses of anti-rabies vaccine at THQ Hospital Diplo between July 25 and August 8. However, he developed rabies symptoms and was admitted to Indus Hospital on October 7.

The spokesperson said inadequate wound cleaning during his initial treatment had been identified. The statement did not establish why he developed rabies despite receiving vaccine doses.

Indus Hospital Karachi has recorded 29 rabies deaths this year, while its Badin facility reported one and Jinnah Hospital recorded eight. More than 15,000 dog-bite patients have visited Indus Hospital this year.

Meanwhile, a 12-year-old boy from Hyderabad was transferred to Jinnah Hospital with suspected rabies after developing hydrophobia and irritability. He had been bitten on his hand and chest around two months earlier but had not received anti-rabies vaccination afterward.

Doctors urged anyone bitten or scratched by a dog to wash the wound with soap and running water for at least 15 minutes and seek immediate medical care. They advised against home remedies or waiting for symptoms to appear.
