The Sindh High Court (SHC) has ordered authorities to immediately remove wall chalking, posters, and banners from public spaces across the province.
The court observed that failure to enforce anti-defacement laws affects citizens’ right to a clean and orderly environment.
The directions were issued during the hearing of a petition against illegal wall chalking and the defacement of public property. The SHC also instructed all local government bodies to take action and clear unauthorized posters, banners, and wall chalking from their respective areas.
During the hearing, the court sought a report from the Sindh Chief Secretary regarding the establishment of an Anti-Defacement Task Force.
Petitioner’s counsel Tariq Mansoor informed the court that the law prohibiting the defacement of walls and public property has been in force since 2013.
He stated that violators can face up to six months in prison or a fine of Rs. 5,000. Those who continue the violation may also be fined an additional Rs. 1,000 for each day the offense continues.
The counsel clarified that property owners are allowed to display signboards related to their own businesses on their premises.
The Sindh government’s legal representative was unable to submit the Chief Secretary’s report during the hearing. The court later adjourned the case for two weeks at the government’s request.
