The Canadian government has expanded its online passport renewal service to all eligible adult citizens living in Canada, making the process more convenient and reducing the need for in-person visits.
The announcement was made on July 28 in Vancouver by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Minister Lena Metlege Diab.
Under the expanded service, eligible Canadians can complete the entire renewal process online by submitting their application, passport photo, and payment digitally. Applicants will no longer need to mail their documents or visit a Service Canada Centre unless they prefer or require in-person assistance.
The government said the online option will make passport services easier to access, particularly for people living in rural or remote communities and those facing mobility challenges.
Previously, access to the online renewal service was limited to a restricted number of applicants. The removal of that limit means more eligible Canadians can now use the digital system.
However, traditional mail-in and in-person passport services will continue to remain available.
The expansion is part of the Canadian government’s broader effort to modernize passport services and provide more secure and user-friendly digital options.
It follows several recent improvements, including the introduction of an online passport application status checker and wider access to 10-business-day passport services at selected Service Canada Centres.
The government has also maintained its passport service guarantee, under which applications must be processed within 30 business days or the applicant will receive the passport free of charge.
