UN Secretary-General António Guterres has appointed Pakistan Armed Forces’ Major General Jawwad Ahmed Qazi, Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military), as the new Force Commander of the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO).
Major General Qazi brings more than 35 years of command, operational and international experience in the Pakistan Army and UN peacekeeping missions, according to an official press release by the Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the UN.
According to Pakistan’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, he has held several senior positions, including General Officer Commanding of an Infantry Division, Force Commander Northern Areas and Director General at the Ministry of Defence.
He has also served in a UN peacekeeping role with the United Nations Transitional Administration for Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Sirmium (UNTAES) in Croatia.
Pakistan’s Permanent Mission said the country takes pride in the appointment and remains committed to supporting UN efforts to promote international peace and stability.
