SBP Governor, Deputy Governors Salaries and Benefits Skyrocket by 94%

The State Bank of Pakistan’s (SBP) Governor and three Deputy Governors received 94 percent more in combined salaries and benefits in fiscal year 2025-26, taking their total package to Rs. 182.53 million, according to the central bank’s annual financial statements.

The four officials received Rs. 93.97 million in FY25. Their combined remuneration therefore increased by Rs. 88.55 million in FY26.

Payments to non-executive members of the SBP Board of Directors also rose sharply. Their combined remuneration reached Rs. 25.16 million, up from Rs. 11.15 million a year earlier, an increase of 126 percent.

The external member of the Monetary Policy Committee received Rs. 8.43 million in FY26, compared with Rs. 7.62 million in FY25.

Meanwhile, total salaries and benefits for SBP staff increased by Rs. 91.18 million, or 8.4 percent, to approximately Rs. 1.16 billion.

Across top management, non-executive directors, the external Monetary Policy Committee member and staff, the combined increase in remuneration was around Rs. 193.5 million during FY26.

The rise in remuneration came as the central bank’s reported profit declined by Rs. 507 billion, or around 20 percent, to Rs. 1,992 billion in FY26 from Rs. 2,499 billion in the previous financial year.

The SBP continued managing the exchange rate and pursuing initiatives to promote digital banking and a cashless economy during the year. However, the introduction of new banknotes remained pending.

SBP’s disclosure says key management personnel include the Governor, Deputy Governors, Board members and other executives responsible for planning and managing the central bank’s activities.

The Governor is appointed by the President of Pakistan, while Deputy Governors are appointed by the federal government. Remuneration for non-executive Board members is determined by the appointing authority.
