Saudi Arabia has removed a school lesson that claimed Israel planned to expand its territory from the Nile River to the Euphrates as part of a plan to create “Greater Israel.”
The change was highlighted in a July 2026 review of Saudi textbooks by the Institute for Monitoring Peace and Cultural Tolerance in School Education (IMPACT-se). The organization reviewed changes in the Saudi curriculum as part of a broader assessment covering textbooks between 2024 and 2026.
The removed lesson was titled “The Zionist Danger.” According to the review, it accused Israel of seeking territorial expansion from the Nile to the Euphrates to establish what it described as “Greater Israel.” The material previously appeared in a Hadith textbook for students in Grades 10 to 12.
Saudi Textbooks Undergoing Major Changes
The latest review says Saudi Arabia has continued to revise how its textbooks discuss Israel, Zionism, religious minorities, jihad, and other sensitive subjects.
For example, newer editions have removed or softened several politically charged references to Israel. A Grade 11 history textbook replaced the phrase “the Zionist enemy” with “the Israeli occupation.” Another textbook removed the sentence, “The Muslims will never give up Jerusalem.”
The report also found that Saudi textbooks have removed several previously identified examples involving Jews and other religious communities. It said all instances it had previously classified as antisemitic were removed from the latest curriculum it reviewed.
Still, the organization said Saudi textbooks have not fully changed their treatment of Israel. Some books continue to describe Israel as an occupying state, while Israel remains absent from several maps used in the curriculum.
