Samsung may significantly expand its foldable lineup in 2027 after stronger-than-expected demand for the Galaxy Z Fold8.
A new report from South Korea’s ETNews claims Samsung has started development work on a second wide-format foldable for the Galaxy Z9 generation. If all currently reported models arrive, Samsung could have as many as five Galaxy Z foldables next year.
Galaxy Z Fold8 Success Is Driving the Expansion
The Galaxy Z Fold8 has reportedly performed well enough for Samsung to increase its 2026 production target by another 1 million units. Its wider, shorter design has proved particularly popular, encouraging Samsung to explore additional phones built around a similar form factor.
The Fold8 opens into a roughly 4:3 display, making the inner screen wider than it is tall. That shape works particularly well for photos, websites, documents, books and multitasking.
Samsung now reportedly wants to experiment with an even wider foldable aimed more directly at video watching and gaming.
A Second Foldable Designed for Movies
The new device is said to be in the very early stages of development, so exact dimensions and specifications have not yet been finalized.
However, Samsung is reportedly considering an inner display with a wider aspect ratio than the Fold8. A wider screen could better match movies and TV shows, reducing the black bars that normally appear when widescreen video is played on a squarer display.
That would give Samsung two different wide-style Fold models, with one prioritizing productivity and general use while the other focuses more heavily on entertainment.
Five Galaxy Z Models Could Arrive
Current reports point to a 2027 lineup consisting of the Galaxy Z Fold9, Galaxy Z Fold9 Ultra, Galaxy Z Flip9, a second wide foldable and a next-generation Galaxy Z TriFold.
This also suggests Samsung has not abandoned the Galaxy Z Flip line despite earlier rumors that the Flip8 could be its final clamshell foldable.
The cheaper Galaxy Z Flip FE, however, is not currently expected to return.
Galaxy Z TriFold Could Get Another Chance
Samsung is also reportedly developing a successor to the Galaxy Z TriFold.
The original model received a limited commercial release and effectively served as an experimental product. The next version is expected to receive wider availability, although there is currently no indication that Samsung plans to make the complicated three-panel foldable significantly cheaper.
Samsung has not confirmed any of these 2027 devices, and development plans can still change before launch. For now, however, the strong response to the Fold8 appears to be encouraging the company to make its foldable lineup much broader rather than smaller.
