Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 has gone through JerryRigEverything’s durability test, putting its new Flex Titanium display construction, redesigned hinge, and chassis through scratches, sand, and bending.
The test was conducted by Zack Nelson, whose durability tests typically examine how smartphones handle scratching, fire, debris, and physical bending.
New Flex Titanium Display Put to the Test
Samsung introduced a new Flex Titanium screen design with the Galaxy Z Fold8 generation.
The construction combines an aluminum plate with a titanium alloy film to reinforce the folding OLED panel inside the Galaxy Z Fold8 and Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. The Galaxy Z Flip8 does not receive the same upgrade.
The new structure is primarily designed to help the foldable display withstand repeated folding and unfolding while also reducing the crease created by those stresses.
However, it does not make the surface of the inner display significantly more scratch-resistant. Like other foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Fold8’s internal screen has a plastic top layer, which remains relatively easy to scratch.
The external 16:10 cover display is considerably more resistant because it uses Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3. This screen needs greater protection because it remains exposed during normal use.
Redesigned Hinge Handles Sand Well
JerryRigEverything also poured sand and grit over the Galaxy Z Fold8 to test how effectively its hinge prevents debris from entering the device.
Samsung’s refined hinge design performed well during the test and managed to keep most of the gritty material outside the phone.
The teardown of the exterior also showed that Samsung uses plastic for the camera island, while most of the phone’s chassis is made from Armor Aluminum.
Bend Test Checks New 4:3 Design
The Galaxy Z Fold8 also went through JerryRigEverything’s traditional bend test.
This test is particularly relevant for the latest model because Samsung has moved to a wider 4:3 aspect ratio for the internal display, changing the physical proportions of the foldable.
The durability test examines whether the wider design and revised internal structure can withstand significant pressure when bent in directions the phone is not normally designed to move.
Samsung’s Flex Titanium construction is intended to strengthen the folding display against the repeated mechanical stresses associated with everyday use, while the redesigned hinge provides additional protection against debris entering the device.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 sits alongside the more premium Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra in Samsung’s latest foldable lineup, while the Z Flip8 uses a different internal display construction.
