The Rawalpindi Municipal Corporation (RMC) has declared the basements of buildings in Raja Bazaar illegal and directed property owners to demolish them immediately.
The decision was taken after heavy rainfall on Friday flooded the basements of shops and business centers, damaging inventory worth billions of rupees.
RMC Chief Officer Imran Ali said Rawalpindi received more than 100 millimeters of rain, causing the drainage system to overflow. The excess water subsequently entered basements that had allegedly been constructed without approval.
He warned that legal action would be taken against building owners who failed to comply with the demolition notices.
Property owners have also been asked to provide evidence that their basements were included in the building plans approved by the relevant authorities.
Meanwhile, cleanup operations continued in Raja Bazaar. Sewage drains along Raja Bazaar, Jamia Masjid Road, and nearby commercial areas were also cleared.
