The Punjab government has decided to shut down marriage halls across the province that continue to operate without suction hoods
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has directed its field teams to take action against marriage halls that failed to comply with the government’s instructions.
EPA Director General Abdullah Nayyer Sheikh issued orders to field officers to begin enforcement against non-compliant venues.
The move comes after the January 31 deadline for installing suction hoods in marriage halls expired.
According to the EPA, businesses were given an additional nine-month grace period after the deadline.
However, the department has now decided to take strict action against those that still failed to meet the requirements.
The agency said it would not provide any further concessions to marriage halls that missed the compliance period.
As part of the crackdown, all marriage halls operating without suction hoods will be shut down and sealed.
The EPA also warned that non-compliant venues will face heavy fines in addition to closure.
The authority said it is following a zero-tolerance policy against smoke emissions from commercial kitchens and other sources of pollution.
The EPA added that authorities have already sealed more than 500 restaurants across Punjab for violating suction hood requirements.
