The Punjab government has decided to form road maintenance squads in every district to ensure daily inspection, upkeep, cleanliness, and repair of damaged roads.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif approved the proposal on Tuesday and directed officials to establish an effective monitoring system for all development projects in the districts.
She asked commissioners and deputy commissioners to closely track project scope, deadlines, quality, spending and physical progress.
The chief minister ordered the installation of cat’s eyes on selected urban roads and the use of thermoplastic markings for better durability and safety.
She also directed that concrete gates should not be built at city and tehsil entry points. Instead, she said city names should be displayed on landscaped green spaces at the entrances.
She further instructed officials to improve median designs, landscaping, lane markings, traffic signs and directional signage. Electricity poles along roads should also be properly lit or decorated, she added.
Maryam Nawaz said food streets should be developed as separate commercial zones with proper infrastructure, cleanliness, parking and traffic arrangements. She also called for better access, sanitation and commercial activity at vegetable markets across the province.
The chief minister stressed that all projects must follow approved designs, materials and technical standards, and said there would be no compromise on transparency or quality.
She also ordered that road safety measures and lighting systems must be energy-efficient, durable and easy to maintain.
She said district entry points should feature modern designs, with Chinese city entrances serving as a model, while tehsil entrances should follow approved concepts with suitable local adjustments.
She also said roads should not have concrete structures in the middle without planters and called for proper landscaping of medians.
Meanwhile, Maryam Nawaz paid tribute to Pakistan Navy officers, sailors, martyrs and Ghazis on Navy Day. She praised the Navy’s professional excellence, maritime protection role and contribution to safeguarding merchant vessels during regional tensions.
