Punjab government and Pakistan Railways have agreed to jointly preserve, restore and beautify the historic railway stations of Rawalpindi, Taxila and Lahore.
The plan was discussed in a meeting at the Railways Ministry, where officials reviewed ongoing and planned development projects across the province.
Federal Minister for Railways Hanif Abbasi said Punjab has made large-scale investments in railway development for the first time, calling it a model of federal-provincial cooperation.
Punjab Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb said the joint initiatives would improve railway infrastructure, passenger facilities, safety measures, environmental sustainability and heritage preservation.
Officials briefed the meeting on eight suburban railway routes in Punjab, three of which have already completed feasibility studies. They said work on the remaining routes will be finalised soon.
The Punjab government has also approved Rs9.7 billion for the upgradation of railway level crossings. The project will convert unsafe crossings into manned crossings in phases to reduce accidents.
The meeting also reviewed progress on the Green Railway Corridor, under which trees will be planted along more than 40 kilometres of railway track.
Officials said cleanliness work under the Suthra Punjab programme is continuing at railway stations, while the Lahore Railway Station circulating area is in its final phase of upgradation and is expected to be completed next month.
In the first phase of the Railway Heritage Preservation Initiative, conservation and beautification work will be carried out at the historic stations of Lahore, Rawalpindi and Taxila.
