The Punjab government has suspended the Green Certificate system for six months after lawmakers raised concerns over land transactions and the management of property records.
Provincial Minister Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman announced the decision during a Punjab Assembly session, saying several issues had emerged during implementation of the system.
Opposition Leader Rana Aftab Ahmed criticised the land record process and alleged that corruption was widespread in the Land Department.
He questioned the effectiveness of the Green Certificate system and said the traditional patwari system had worked better for land-related transactions.
Rana Aftab Ahmed also pointed to the lack of an effective one-window mechanism for handling property sale and purchase records.
Raja Shaukat Bhatti raised further concerns, saying that multiple people had sometimes been shown as owners of the same two-acre plot.
MPA Amjad Ali Javed said he had earlier warned the Senior Member Board of Revenue about possible problems in the Green Certificate system.
The Punjab Assembly Speaker also questioned whether the provincial government had the authority to suspend the system if it had already been approved by the assembly.
He said any decision to suspend an assembly-approved measure should also involve the legislature.
