Punjab has reported 70,586 dog-bite cases so far this year, highlighting growing concerns over the threat posed by stray dogs across the province.
According to the Punjab Health Department, Lahore alone has recorded 30,514 cases this year, while four people have died from rabies following dog bites.
The province is currently recording an average of around 400 dog-bite cases every day. Official figures show that 38,586 cases were reported during the first three months of 2026, while Punjab recorded a total of 243,299 cases in 2025.
The rising number of incidents has raised serious public health concerns and increased calls for district administrations to take stronger measures, including dog-culling campaigns in affected areas.
The Punjab government has already introduced several initiatives to control the stray dog population, including Capture, Neuter, Vaccinate and Release (CNVR) programs aimed at limiting breeding.
Municipal authorities have also carried out anti-stray dog campaigns in high-risk areas, while public awareness drives have focused on rabies prevention and the importance of seeking timely medical treatment after a dog bite.
Authorities have also been directed to improve waste management, as open garbage attracts stray dogs and contributes to an increase in their population.
However, residents have complained that these measures are not being implemented effectively.
Healthcare facilities across Punjab are providing treatment to dog-bite victims, including free anti-rabies vaccines, post-exposure prophylaxis, and emergency wound care.
