The Lahore High Court (LHC) has directed Punjab Police to introduce a uniform and readable format for computerized First Information Reports (FIRs) across the province.
Chief Justice Alia Neelum issued the directions while hearing a contempt of court petition against former Chuhng SHO Rashid Amin Butt.
During the hearing, the chief justice expressed concern over the extremely small font used in FIRs, saying some documents were difficult to read even with glasses.
“Have you seen the FIR? It cannot be read even with glasses,” she remarked.
The chief justice observed that the problem was occurring repeatedly because information that would normally cover three pages was being compressed onto a single page.
“They say they are saving paper. While saving paper, our eyes have been ruined,” she said.
The court directed Inspector General of Punjab Police Abdul Karim to ensure that all police stations in Punjab use a standardized computerized FIR format with an appropriate font size. It also ordered that a uniform template be prepared and circulated across the province.
The IG informed the court that a letter had already been sent to the chairman of the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) regarding the issue. He said PITB had provided assistance and FIRs could now be enlarged by up to 70 percent.
Chief Justice Neelum said a standard font should be fixed for all FIRs and noted that the change should not take more than one or two days to implement.
The court directed the Punjab IG to submit a report on the measures taken by September 29 and adjourned the hearing until the same date.
