Punjab Likely to Extend Contracts of 25,000 Teachers

The Punjab government is likely to extend the contracts of around 25,000 School Teacher Interns (STIs) working in public schools across the province.

Their contracts expired on May 22, before the start of the summer holidays. The new academic session has now started, but many STIs are still waiting for a decision on reappointment or contract extension.

Punjab’s education minister had earlier announced that the contracts would be extended after the summer break. However, the decision has not yet been implemented.

The Punjab Education Department has sent the contract extension summary to the Chief Minister for approval.

The department said the contracts will be extended once the summary receives approval.

The Punjab Teachers Union has also called for an immediate decision. The union said the shortage of teachers is affecting academic activities in government schools.
