Punjab Jail Superintendent Arrested Over Alleged Rs. 45 Crore Bribe

The Punjab Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) has arrested Gujranwala Jail Superintendent Azhar Javed Cheema over allegations of receiving a Rs. 45 crore (Rs. 450 million) bribe.

According to officials, ACE personnel arrested Cheema from inside Gujranwala Jail and launched an investigation into the alleged corruption.

The accused was produced before a court shortly after his arrest. During the hearing, the ACE circle officer requested a 12-day physical remand, arguing that investigators needed time to recover the alleged bribe amount and gather evidence.

The court, however, granted the anti-corruption authorities a five-day physical remand of Cheema and handed him over to ACE for further investigation.

Officials alleged that Cheema received Rs. 450 million in bribes from a citizen, Afzal Chaudhry, on August 19.

The arrest comes as Punjab authorities continue to take action against officials accused of corruption and misuse of authority.

ACE officials are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged payment and determine whether other individuals were involved in the matter.

The investigation is ongoing, and the allegations against Cheema have not yet been proven in court
